US Government Ethereum address compromised for $20M
Around 20 million dollars worth of crypto compromising of Ethereum, USDC, USDT and aUSDC has moved from an address that belongs to US government to hacker’s address.
US government’s address: 0xc9E6E51C7dA9FF1198fdC5b3369EfeDA9b19C34c
Attacker’s address: 0x3486eE700CcaF3E2F9C5eC9730a2e916a4740A9f
This address is one of many addresses being used by Bitfinex hackers and interestingly, this address was also mentioned in court documents in Bitfinex’s seizure case.
These funds were moved to another address that started converting all the cryptos to Ethereum. Then, the funds were passed to a serious of suspicious address and finally sent to a money laundering service.
On flip side, we do find this hilarious – imagine hacking the US government. But once they send those funds to a centralized cryptocurrency exchange like Binance, it is over. All CEX have mandatory KYC so unless they forge that too, the hackers are cooked. Unless they are from North Korea where they would be untouchable.
